The Portsmouth region as whole is noted for its many restaurants, attractions and shopping opportunities, which include downtown Portsmouth, outlet malls Kittery, Maine, as well as major malls in Newington, New Hampshire. Portsmouth sits near the mouth of the Piscataqua River, a short, wide river that divides New Hampshire and Maine.
Martin Hill Inn consists of two period buildings. The land on which the main and guest houses are located was sold by former Lieutenant Governor George Vaughn to the Martin Family in 1710 for 50 British pounds. Over the years this section of Portsmouth became known as Martin Hill.
